New Service to Track BitTorrent Downloads Online

New Service to Track BitTorrent Downloads Online

It is not a secret that BitTorrent is not anonymous, but few of file-sharers would expect to see the list of their recent downloads publicly available. This is what new website “I Know What You Download” does. Besides, the site can help you uncover the torrenting habits of other people with a nifty spy tool.

f4887d29268a5fcf2efb740d329d6bdb.th.jpg

If you download content via BitTorrent without a VPN, proxy or seedbox, anyone can see it without asking. In fact, this is now copyright trolls propagate – lots of firms are engaged in monitoring and reporting files shared via torrent websites. As a result, thousands of people all over the world get notifications and settlement offers in their mailboxes from copyright holders.

The first service to disclose the public nature of people’s sharing habits was Youhavedownloaded.com, which has been closed for a while now. Today, another service showed up – perhaps even scarier. “I Know What You Download” is able to monitor torrent traffic non-stop and makes the information public. For example, you can check what information they store on the IP-address you currently have.

So far, the service stores information on 460,000 torrents and 70m unique IP-addresses captured only during the last month. Aside from enabling people to check their own downloads, the website also helps people check what others have downloaded using any IP-address. Moreover, “I Know What You Download” offers a nifty spy tool enabling you to see what your friends are downloading even without knowing their IP-addresses. All you need is send them a link – once it is clicked, their download history shows up, without the IP-address being exposed.

Given that the site operates in two languages – English and Russian, it is easy to understand that it’s a creation of Russian developers. Marketing director with a Russian name Andrey Rogov confirmed that the website helps showcase the abilities of the company behind it to various outfits they work with, including copyright owners. He also explained that his company offers API access to its data for interested parties and is able to provide TCP dumps as another proof that downloaded file is linked to a certain IP-address. Although not every file-sharer would like to see their download records exposed to the general public, the developers generally don’t respond to removal requests.

BaBaDapper avatarQuite frightening just reading the article!
So this company is showcasing its ability in public, then to charge 'interested parties' for more data?
Of course the move to VPN will help but then I expect VPNs to be outlawed in the future, with 'security' being given as the reason.

gypsywarrior avatarSeems like if you go to the website, you're essentially offering up your IP address to be looked into. My advice is steer well clear of it. No point announcing yourself unnecessarily.

No avatar@gypsywarrior its more like they scan trackers and DHT. Its possible to make some countermesures vs them. for instance as they dont want to break law they cant download a thing. not to mention that their search is a bit broad[ noone rly dl's so much to have activity @1000+ torrents]. Just block suspicious activity. not to mention they still cant see what you dl from private trackers with dht off.

No avatarWho cares? Hollywood has already been paying firms to collect the IP Addresses of everyone downloading stuff FOR YEARS. They contact your ISP and try to scare you to stop. I don't know what they do to people that refuse to stop and keep getting caught. Maybe they get their ISP shut off or get sued in court.

There is literally nothing new. Sites like this existed in the past that showed what you downloaded.

All you have to do is use your VPN and you will be fine.

This is useless information. In no way any kind of a new threat. It's always been visible in the protocol, who is connected.

rigmar avatarProblem is VPN increases you Ping time and can result in very slow download speeds as a result. I just use a Peer Blocker, it is built into Vuze and updates every month. I did go to that site and it showed only 2 obsolete torrents under my name, none of which I had been the original seed. I have noticed that average torrent swarm download speeds have been going down and not up for some time now and can not help suspecting that VPN services are partially to blame, as well of course as the Prats who think downloading 200 Active torrents at the same time is cool. Some actually boast in the forums about how many torrents they have active all at the same time... Duh Homer Simpson springs to mind.

And put up a stupid PR page about how "Oh shucks we were wrong, sorry about the incorrect outdated info, but you should still believe in our cause"...... Like dude said above, be a REAL SHAME if someone ddosed the piss out of this site......Nice car you have there, be a real shame if someone sh*t on it.....

qiss avatarJust because you visit a torrent website doesn't necessarily mean you are downloading files from it, for instance, I come hear to read the news section. Films are usually crap anyway so why would I waste my time downloading crap when I could spend that time creating my own music compositions. just sayin.

MyAmusement avatarNo privacy for anyone these days. We pay for the privilege of having access to the internet from a service provider and it should be up to us how we use it. Unless your committing a disgusting crime..... you know what I mean, or stealing someone's identity. I don't think getting files someone is kind enough to share is a crime. They do it for free and it, I hope is always used the same way. I totally agree its all about the money and espionage, as far as being able to find where users go, like big brother watching but the other countries activities ...sounds silly. Russia and China are trying to stick their chests out further to show other world leaders/countries that they can do things better. Yet before I found out about KAT and here I was paying for pirated copies in most cases on ebay. I don't sell or do anything to harm anyone else as I don't feel that those kind enough to share and seed back do either. All about money, control of our activity and just mean. Hope a heap of the people who know how to use the internet/programs give these meanies what they put out. Payback - what goes around comes around. If the movie companies want us to pay offer us refunds when the movies are not available everywhere at the same time or if the acting and story is pathetic. Not everyone can afford to buy movie or to even go to see them. Ranting I know, Thanks for all these great current news subjects that get written about. Makes it easier to know what is going on and more understanding.

MarcusDelectus avatar"I Know" know what? there are no user account details this is nothing new swarms are monitored all the time. So proves nothing, means nothing and can be used for nothing. Probably a good wake up call though for anyone using their personal net connection to get a vpn or proxy.
I did not enter an exact ip that could be associated with my account but one in the same range and it showed nothing close or similar, used tor to visit site as well.

My suggestion is not to enter your exact ip since you can be sure those dicks are probably keeping track of that too, as well as ip visiting the site.

On a side note if you are using a vpn remember to disable webrtc since it can be used to reveal your ip, there is a plugin for firefox.

I also recommend using "noscript" add-on takes a bit of extra effort to use but you will be amazed at what some sites try to run when you visit them.

At this point I don't believe it blocks html5 canvas data. If you don't know what that is you should as it can be used to uniquely identify your computer quite covertly.

I know there are plugins that claim to block the extraction of canvas data, but most are not quite there yet.
Tor browser does block canvasing data extraction, incidentally extratorrent extracts canvas data from your browser

Of course most everyone has heard of cookies that sites store on your computer, they remain regardless of your ip

You can test your vpn or proxy at "https://ipleak . net" that's for dns leaks or webrtc

Canvas data extraction at "https://browserleaks . com/canvas#how-does-it-work"

It takes a bit more than just a vpn or proxy to be anonymous

No avatarIF NSA/CIA want's into your life, it's gonna happen. That's what happened to me with home invasion , etc. That or someone with the same tech skills just toying with my life that law enforcement has no cure for right now. VPN only slows you down when privacy policies are still in place. Good luck with all the other crap.

rouel26 avatarI am using a VPN and when I checked the website, I noticed that there were downloads that I did not make. I guess others also used the same IP address to download torrents.

And the IP address that was assigned to my PC (using a VPN) had a comment that it distributed child pornography. Well, I haven't downloaded any porn torrent.

Also, I entered the actual IP address of my PC, but the website does not have any information regarding the torrents that I downloaded before (when I was not using a VPN).

Selsley avatarremember guys its a new service if youre following the link memtioned in the article, then thats the old service which closed in 2011. i have no record of downloading anything, even after visiting the site 3 days ago, and ive downloaded 15 shows since i looked. heres what they say on their site about themselves..............

How we collect data
Our system collects torrent files in two ways: parsing torrent sites and listening DHT network. We have more than 500.000 torrents which where classified and which are using now for collecting peer sharing facts (up to 700.000.000 daily). We don't guarantee we can show ALL peer sharing facts:

Single IP address could be assigned to multiple users. It depends on user's ISP. For example mobile operators often used this schema.
IP address could be dynamic. In such case it changes every time user connects to the Internet or periodically.
User could donwload torrent which we don't have
DMCA
We don't hosts or makes available any of contents, files, torrents or magnet links. But if you think you have some DMCA notice, write to us.

Cooperation
We can:

Provide API to get raw data or aggregated content reports
Make recommendations for IP address based on torrents downloading
Help you to protect you digital content in torrent network
Catch users who shares some content via torrent network (with TCP dump to prove it)
Find users who shares child porno
And more other things
